Permission to pause: 3 ways to mindfully step back without losing momentum for your mission
By Margaret Hunter on

We see you. You’ve been working and fretting around the clock to make sure no dollar is left behind. Then, you orchestrate those bucks so you get the most bang out of each one, all while keeping an eye on the account to ensure the cents aren’t evaporating too quickly!
That’s a lot of money minding, and guess what? It might be time to take a break.
Here are a few ways to mindfully disengage from the fundraising race while remaining devoted to your organization’s mission.
1. Read a great book
Read a great book with a story that grips you. Don’t waste your time on something that doesn’t keep you curious about what's going to happen next.
Fundraising is about great storytelling, and the way to become a great storyteller is by reading great stories. So take off your thinking cap and pick up a book—fully immerse yourself in the world and let the story take you for a ride. When you have finished reading, you can put your thinking cap back on.
When it’s time to start fundraising again, revisit your story, the twists and turns, the places that gripped you, the moments that moved you. Explore how and why the story kept you interested in reading more. Then apply those same storytelling tactics to your own organization’s narrative.
Don’t let your story be like a book someone picks up and realizes isn’t worth finishing. Keep your donors eager to read more. You’ve got a great story to tell!
2. Get involved with someone else’s nonprofit
The reason most people get into nonprofit work is a desire to help make a difference, driven by an altruistic pursuit. You saw needs that weren’t being met and were inspired to meet them.
Not many people get into nonprofit work because they are particularly keen on asking people for money. It is necessary for nonprofit work, and you have risen to the occasion, but it isn’t the heart and soul of why you work for a nonprofit.
So while you’re taking a break from fundraising, take some time to do the thing that got you into your work in the first place. Serving at someone else’s nonprofit where you’re not the one worrying about money might be the perfect antidote to fundraising fatigue.
Let your service to others be a wellspring of renewed joy and compassion for your work. As we know, acts of sacrifice and service pay us back tenfold in deep satisfaction and help create a better world for everyone. What can be more rewarding than that?

3. Take time to celebrate your staff
So much of your fundraising efforts take your attention outside of your organization. As you take a break from “the ask,” a way to make sure your organization doesn’t lose steam and still feels empowered for the next fundraising push is to care for and build up those who make it all possible.
Caring for your staff will reap benefits in the future. It will extend the goodwill of your organization to the people building it. This act doesn’t have to be huge or expensive. It can be as simple as turning your gaze inward and treating your staff as part of your mission—ensure, they feel seen and supported.
You can start by asking questions and following with encouragement and praise. You can sprinkle in a few treats as you see fit. The goal is to reinforce the pillars that hold up your mission.
Treat your staff like people first, and their ability to support your mission will become superhuman.
Take what you’ve learned with you
Finally, when your pause is over, and it’s time to start asking for money, I hope you take all that you gathered during your time of reflection with you—epic storytelling, a renewed sense of purpose, a deep satisfaction in your soul, and a team that’s ready to move mountains to reach your organization’s shared goal.
