Why make BetterWorld free?

We started BetterWorld with a desire to build a business that would serve the common good. We imagined a platform of best-in-class fundraising tools with time-saving automation and an intuitive user experience — and we decided to make it free, so that individuals and organizations would never again be constrained by budget in their pursuit of doing good. Over the years, we've grown our team, platform, and reach — now with thousands of organizations joining BetterWorld each month. Our vision of 'good business' remains the same though. While we certainly aren't perfect, we focus every day on improvement, and we'll never stop trying to build a business that serves the common good.

Can I use BetterWorld if I'm not a 501c3 nonprofit?

Accepted Answer

We made BetterWorld to make it easier to raise money for causes that matter. While most of the organizations on our platform are nonprofits, probably 20-30% are individuals, businesses, or groups without 501c3 status. No additional costs either way — regardless of what kind of group or organization, we don't take any percentage of what you raise.

How is the BetterWorld platform sustainable?

Our mission at BetterWorld is to provide free, best-in-class fundraising tools for organizations around the country. We don't sell data, share email lists with advertisers, or insert tacky ads on fundraising pages. We don't withhold premium features or limit the number of team members, items, or campaigns that organizations can do. Simply put, we don't believe the size of your budget should dictate the quality of fundraising tools available to you. So how is this all possible? Our platform is sustained by asking donors to consider an optional contribution on top of their winning bids, ticket purchases and so on, which starts $0.25 and goes up to ~10% suggested contribution. Again — it's totally optional — and it's okay if no one contributes! We're here first and foremost to make a difference and support nonprofits.

Does BetterWorld handle receipts?

Yes! BetterWorld seamlessly and automatically handles receipts for all payments. Essentially, we give donors all the information they would need to pass on to an accountant at year-end. For a winning auction item, for example, we would include the item name, the estimated fair market value, the winning bid amount, as well as the organization name and tax ID.

What is support like?

We're baffled by companies that treat customer support like a problem to be solved or an annoyance to be dealt with. Supporting the organizations on our platform is the most important thing we do — and, selfishly, it's really helpful to us! By being attentive on email, chat, phone, and zoom — we can listen closely to ways we can improve and build a platform that better serves organizations. While we have a great selection of self-service videos and articles, we really hope you'll reach out directly. You do us a huge favor by letting us know ways we can improve!

Is BetterWorld PCI Compliant?

BetterWorld takes data security very seriously. We're PCI compliant, and then some. All of our pages are secured and encrypted and we never sell any data to third-party vendors. In short, we're respectful of your data, and we treat your organization and donors the way we'd want to be treated. Candidly, large tech companies have been misbehaving in this area for a long time, and we're glad that more regulations and protections are being put in place to protect individuals. It will (hopefully) lead more companies to do what they should have been doing in the first place: care for the people they serve and not view them simply as opportunities for marginal revenue.
