How much does recurring giving really cost? (Platform fee comparison)

By Team BetterWorld on

Predictable revenue is one of the biggest advantages of a monthly donor program. But the cost of accepting recurring donations is often more complicated than a single percentage on a pricing page.

Platform fees, payment processing, monthly subscriptions, and other charges can all reduce the amount of each recurring gift that reaches your mission over time.

Over months and years, even small differences in pricing can add up to thousands of dollars that either support your mission or go toward fundraising costs.

To help you compare your options, this guide breaks down the pricing of leading fundraising platforms, explains how recurring donation fees work, and highlights the costs nonprofits often overlook before choosing a platform.

Most platforms do not charge a separate recurring donation fee, but that doesn't mean recurring giving is free. Total cost usually comes from a mix of platform fees, payment processing, and subscription costs

How recurring donation platform fees work

Let's take a closer look at how recurring donation platform fees work and what each fee means for your nonprofit.

1. Platform fee

The platform fee is the share the fundraising software company takes for use of its product.

On some tools, that fee is 0%. On others, it is a percentage of every gift. Donorbox, for example, lists 2.95% on Standard donation forms, while BetterWorld lists 0% on its Free Forever plan and Give Lively says it charges nonprofits nothing for platform access.

Over time, even a few percentage points matter because the fee repeats on every monthly charge.

2. Payment processing fee

Payment processing is charged by the processor, not by the fundraising platform.

That is the fee paid to move money through Stripe, PayPal, Shift4, or a similar service. Donorbox and Give Lively both publish discounted nonprofit Stripe card rates of 2.2% + $0.30 for eligible U.S. nonprofits.

3. Recurring donation fee

Some nonprofits assume recurring gifts come with a separate monthly-donor surcharge. On the platforms reviewed here, that is usually not the public pricing pattern, apart from GoFundMe.

Most of the time, recurring giving is built into donation forms or donation pages, and the real cost comes from platform and processor pricing, not from a second recurring fee line item.

4. Monthly subscription

A monthly software fee can change the math fast, especially for smaller nonprofits with a modest recurring donor base.

Donorbox’s Standard plan is free, but Pro is $150 per month. Givebutter’s core product is free, but Givebutter Plus starts at $29 per month and rises with contact count.

5. Donor-covered fees

Donor-covered fees can lower what the nonprofit pays, but they do not work the same way everywhere. BetterWorld lets donors cover processing and says 95%+ choose to do so.

Donorbox also lets donors cover fees. Givebutter uses a different model: when tips are enabled, the Givebutter Guarantee says the nonprofit pays no platform or processing fees. However, with tips disabled, you will end up paying a 3% platform fee.

Hidden recurring donation costs most nonprofits overlook

A low platform fee doesn't always mean a low total cost. Here are the recurring donation costs nonprofits often overlook.

1. Failed recurring payments

A monthly donor is only valuable if the gift actually keeps processing. Expired cards, replaced cards, and failed renewals create silent churn.

Donorbox says it retries failed recurring payments six times and covers certain account-updater fees tied to expired cards, which shows how much recurring value can be lost if recovery is weak.

Strong donor self-service also matters here: BetterWorld, Givebutter, Give Lively, Zeffy, and Donorbox all publish ways for donors to update payment methods or manage recurring gifts themselves.

2. Missing fundraising tools

A donation form alone may not be enough. If your recurring giving platform cannot also support events, peer-to-peer, auctions, ticketing, or donor management, the “cheap” platform cost can be canceled out by extra software contracts.

BetterWorld’s every plan includes auctions, events, donation forms, peer-to-peer, donor management, and more with no feature gating.

Givebutter highlights a full free suite of fundraising, CRM, and engagement tools. Zeffy also promotes ticketing, auctions, memberships, donor management, and newsletters in the same free ecosystem.

3. CRM and integration costs

Integration costs are where simple pricing pages often stop being simple. Donorbox lists add-on costs such as Zapier/API for $17 per month.

Givebutter Plus is a separate paid layer starting at $29 per month. GoFundMe Pro also says optional add-ons and advanced integrations may carry added cost.

4. Premium onboarding and support

Support is not priced the same way on every platform. Donorbox Premium includes 24/7 priority support, a Customer Success Manager, and guided onboarding.

GoFundMe Pro’s custom pricing includes assisted onboarding and hands-on support. Givebutter says phone support is reserved for active paid Plus subscribers.

That means implementation help may live behind a paywall even if the core fundraising tool looks free.

5. Scaling costs

As recurring revenue grows, pricing often changes with it. Donorbox’s lower platform rates sit behind Pro and Premium tiers.

Givebutter Plus pricing rises by contact volume. So the platform that looks cheapest at 50 recurring donors may not stay cheapest at 5,000 contacts or a multi-channel fundraising stack.

Beyond fees: What should nonprofits compare?

Pricing matters, but it is only part of the decision. The stronger question is not just “What does this platform cost?” It is “What work, donor friction, and extra software will this platform remove from my team?”

Major platforms now highlight features such as recurring donor self-service, automated receipts, reporting, integrations, and recurring-gift management because those functions save staff time and help protect donor retention.

The platform that gives nonprofits the most value

For most nonprofits, the goal is not simply to find the lowest fee. It's to keep more donation revenue while reducing software costs and administrative work.

BetterWorld combines 0% platform fees on its Free Forever plan with built-in recurring giving, donor management, events, auctions, peer-to-peer fundraising, reporting, and integrations like Salesforce and Blackbaud.

Instead of paying for multiple fundraising tools, nonprofits get them in one platform.

Processing fees remain standard (2.9% + $0.30 for cards and 1.5% + $0.30 for ACH), but BetterWorld reports that 95%+ of donors choose to cover processing costs, which helps more of each recurring gift reach your mission.

When you compare overall value, not just platform fees, BetterWorld offers one of the strongest combinations of transparent pricing, built-in fundraising tools, and long-term cost savings for nonprofits that want to grow recurring giving.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do recurring donations have extra fees?

Usually no. Most fundraising platforms do not charge a separate recurring donation fee. Instead, nonprofits typically pay platform fees, payment processing fees, subscription costs, or optional add-ons.

2. Is payment processing included in platform fees?

No. Payment processing fees are typically charged separately by providers such as Stripe or PayPal, even when a fundraising platform advertises 0% platform fees

3. Should nonprofits choose the platform with the lowest fees?

Not always. The lowest fee does not always mean the best long-term value. Donor self-service, recurring donor management, reporting, integrations, support, and included fundraising tools can save real staff time and reduce churn, which can matter more than a small fee gap.

4. What is the best platform for recurring donations?

The best platform depends on your nonprofit's budget and fundraising needs. Look beyond transaction fees and compare recurring donor management, reporting, integrations, customer support, and included fundraising tools. For nonprofits looking to minimize platform costs, BetterWorld offers 0% platform fees alongside a full suite of fundraising tools.
