Stop losing donors: 10 friction points that quietly kill online giving (and how to fix them)

By Team BetterWorld on

Most nonprofits are losing donations without realizing it. About 8-9 out of every 10 people who start the online giving process don’t complete it. That’s not always because they change their minds. It’s often because something in the donation experience gets in the way.

From slow-loading pages to unclear forms to last-minute fees, even small issues can cause someone to click away before they hit “submit.” These problems are easy to overlook but can quietly drain your fundraising potential.

The good news? They’re also easy to fix. Below are 10 friction points that quietly kill online giving, along with practical steps your organization can take to remove them.

1. Slow page load times

Online donors don’t wait. Even a few seconds of delay can lead to major drop-offs. Donation pages that load in four seconds convert up to 450% worse than those that load in just one. Each added second makes it more likely a donor will leave before completing their gift.

Fix: Aim for pages that load in under two seconds. Use smaller image files, minimize extra code, use a fast host, and consider a content delivery network (CDN) to speed things up.

2. Cluttered or long forms

Donation forms that ask for too much info can turn donors away. About 21% of users abandon the process if it feels too long or complicated. Including fields like employer details, full address, or custom notes can make the form feel overwhelming.

Fix: Keep your form short and focused. Ask only for essential information. Use single-column layouts and group related fields on one line to reduce perceived length. Even small layout changes can improve completion rates by up to 40%.

3. Too many pages

Every extra page in your donation flow adds a barrier. Donors drop off with each click, studies show that conversion rates fall by 8% or more every time a new page loads. One organization simplified its donation process by removing a multi-step confirmation screen and saw a 176% increase in donations.

Fix: Keep the entire donation process on a single page when possible. Eliminate unnecessary review steps or redirects. Let donors move straight from the donation ask to a thank-you page after payment.

4. Hidden fees

Unexpected charges are one of the fastest ways to lose a donor. Whether it’s a surprise processing fee or a flat handling charge added at the end, donors often abandon the gift when costs appear without warning. One test showed that requiring donors to cover all fees led to a 38.5% drop in conversions.

Fix: Be upfront about any costs or, even better, absorb them. If you give donors the option to cover processing fees, present it as a gentle, opt-in choice. Never add surprise charges at the last step.

5. Too many options

Donors can get overwhelmed when presented with too many choices. Optional fields like tribute messages, fee coverage, or comment boxes may seem helpful, but they often slow people down. In one case, removing most of these extras led to a 107% increase in donations.

Fix: Keep the giving process focused. Pre-select a default payment method, offer a few suggested donation amounts, and hide non-essential fields behind expandable sections. A simple layout with a clear call to action helps donors stay on track and complete their gift without hesitation.

6. Confusing layout

A cluttered donation page distracts donors and lowers conversions. Sidebars, navigation menus, and extra calls-to-action give people too many chances to click away. One test showed that simply removing the site’s top navigation bar led to a nearly 200% increase in donations.

Fix: Treat your donation page like a landing page. Strip out unrelated links, images, or menu items that aren’t part of the giving process. Keep branding consistent so donors know they’re still on your site, but focus the layout around the donation form and a short impact message.

7. Not mobile-friendly

More than 25% of donations now come through mobile devices, but mobile conversion rates still trail desktop—about 8% vs. 11%. If your donation form isn’t easy to use on a phone, donors may pinch, scroll, or give up entirely.

Fix: Use a responsive, single-column layout that adjusts to different screen sizes. Add large buttons and input fields to make forms finger-friendly. Test the full donation experience on actual phones to confirm everything loads quickly and taps easily.

8. Lack of trust

If your donation page doesn’t feel secure, donors will hesitate. Pages that look unfamiliar or show third-party branding can make people question where their money is really going. Missing security badges or contact information adds to the doubt. In fact, nearly half of donors say visible trust marks made them feel confident giving online.

Fix: Make your nonprofit’s identity clear. Use your logo, brand colors, and mission-focused language. Use a secure HTTPS form, display trusted payment and SSL icons, and include a simple contact link or phone number.

9. No clear context or impact message

A donation form without context feels empty. When donors land on a blank or generic page with no reminder of the cause, they may hesitate or leave. Donation pages that include a clear message, story, or image consistently raise more than those without.

Fix: Add a short, compelling message to the top of your donation page. Even one or two lines about how the gift will make a difference can keep donors engaged. If possible, include a photo or bullet points showing real impact.

10. Limited payment options

Donors are more likely to give when they can use their preferred payment method. Requiring only credit cards or excluding mobile-friendly options can lead to missed gifts, especially on phones.

Fix: Offer a mix of payment methods. Enable digital wallets for mobile users and include ACH for high-value or repeat donors. The easier you make it to give, the more gifts you’ll receive, and the more likely donors are to return.
