Person holding a credit card and smartphone — Is Givebutter really free? What your donors are actually paying

Givebutter’s 0% platform fee is one of the main reasons nonprofits choose it, and that decision is completely reasonable. But “0%” is not always the same as “no cost.”

Fees may be shifted to donors, added during checkout, or handled differently based on the settings your organization selects.

That distinction becomes more important as fundraising volume grows. For nonprofits raising $1–10 million, even small donor-paid charges can affect conversion rates, donor trust, and the true cost of each campaign.

If your board or finance team has started asking, “But it says 0%, so what are we actually paying?” they are asking the right question.

Let’s find out whether Givebutter is really free, what donors may pay, how Givebutter pricing works in practice, and when Givebutter alternatives may offer a clearer cost structure.

Givebutter pricing explained: Optional donor tips vs platform fees

Givebutter’s core fundraising tools are advertised as “free,” but in practice the platform shifts its costs onto donors. By default, Givebutter asks each donor to leave an optional tip of about 15% of the gift to cover the platform’s costs.

If donors pay this tip, and usually also a requested payment-processing fee, the nonprofit pays a 0% platform fee. In other words, Givebutter guarantees that nonprofits see 100% of each gift if donors choose to cover the fees.

If an organization turns off tipping, however, Givebutter charges a flat 3% platform fee on each donation. On top of that, standard credit-card processing fees still apply: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, or 1.9% + $0.30 for ACH bank transfers.

Givebutter’s Free plan has no monthly cost and offers unlimited campaigns, donors, and contacts.

There is also Givebutter Plus, a paid upgrade with extra features. Plus starts at about $29 per month for up to 250 contacts, but it uses the same 0% versus 3% fee model.

Why the Givebutter free model is conditional

Givebutter’s free model depends on donors accepting extra costs at checkout. These charges are optional, but they can raise the final total well above the amount the donor planned to give.

For example, someone making a $100 donation may see a checkout total of around $118 after the suggested tip and processing costs are added. Donors must then decide whether to accept the higher total, reduce the tip, remove it, or stop the donation altogether.

These prompts can leave donors feeling:

  • Surprised when the checkout total is higher than the gift they selected.
  • Pressured to accept a suggested tip because it appears during a charitable donation.
  • Confused about which charges support the nonprofit and which go to the platform.
  • Frustrated by having to adjust optional fees before completing the gift.
  • Skeptical about how much of their payment will reach the organization.

Not every donor will react the same way. Some will accept the default amounts without changing them, while others may remove the tip or decline to cover processing. Frequent donors may also experience tipping fatigue after repeatedly seeing extra payment requests across online checkouts.

Nonprofits therefore need to look beyond the 0% platform fee. The model may reduce the organization’s direct software costs, but it can shift the burden to donors and make the giving experience less predictable.

Where Givebutter falls short for growing nonprofit organizations

Givebutter can work well for smaller, event-focused nonprofits that need fundraising pages, auctions, events, and basic donor management in one platform. However, as organizations grow, several limits may become more noticeable:

  • Basic CRM capabilities: Givebutter tracks contacts, giving history, and simple segments, but it does not match the reporting, automation, analytics, and workflow depth of enterprise CRMs. It may also be less suitable for nonprofits using Salesforce as their main database or managing complex, multi-entity operations.
  • Limited native integrations: Givebutter connects with tools such as QuickBooks, Canva, and Meta Fundraising, but many other data transfers rely on Zapier or manual exports. Salesforce and HubSpot connections may require third-party tools, and some data, including recurring gifts, may not sync fully.
  • Fewer advanced tools: Givebutter does not include built-in grant management, while larger nonprofits may need deeper event controls, custom reporting, advanced permissions, and support for multiple chapters or locations.
  • Higher costs as needs grow: The free CRM is unlimited, but automation, texting, and other advanced tools require Givebutter Plus. Pricing rises with contact volume, so costs may increase as the donor database grows.

What to look for in a Givebutter alternative

Here are some features to look for when checking other platforms:

  • Transparent fees: Prefer solutions with clear pricing. For example, flat processing fees or a known subscription rather than relying on donor tips.
  • No surprises at checkout: The donation form should not have hidden fee prompts. If asking donors to cover costs, the language should be donor-centric and clear (e.g., “Help cover our processing fee” rather than an arbitrary tip).
  • Robust CRM: A good system should handle all your donor data – custom fields, segmentation, recurring gifts, pledge tracking, and wealth screening. It should let you report on donors or campaigns without extra coding.
  • Native integrations: Check that the platform connects directly (or via supported add-ons) to your existing tools. Critical systems include Salesforce, HubSpot, Blackbaud (Raiser's Edge), Mailchimp, and accounting software. Zapier support is good, but native APIs or connectors are even better for reliability.
  • Scalability and features: Make sure advanced features (like event/auction management, peer-to-peer campaigns, matching gifts lookup, SMS, and multilingual support) are included or available. Some providers reserve these for expensive tiers.
  • Support and training: Good customer support (24/7 chat, phone, or nonprofit-focused account management) is valuable, especially during big campaigns. Check reviews on G2 or Capterra.

BetterWorld: A strong alternative to Givebutter

BetterWorld offers the low-cost appeal of Givebutter without forcing nonprofits into one pricing model. Its free plan is also supported by optional donor contributions. When donors choose to contribute, the nonprofit keeps 100% of the donation.

The difference becomes clearer when donor prompts are turned off. BetterWorld gives nonprofits several defined options:

  • Flex Plan: Pay a flat 2.2% fee on standard donations and 5% on events.
  • Partner Plan: Reduce the platform fee to 1.25% with an annual subscription.
  • KeyStone Plan: Lower the platform fee to 1% for organizations with larger fundraising needs.

This structure gives your team more control. You can use donor contributions, pay a clear transaction fee, or choose an annual plan with lower rates. Your board and finance team can see exactly how the model works before approving it.

BetterWorld also provides the tools that growing nonprofits often need. Every user gets access to robust reporting, custom forms, donor management, and ready-to-use integrations.

Native connections with Salesforce, HubSpot, and Raiser’s Edge NXT help fundraising data move between systems without depending only on Zapier or manual exports.
